MS in Computational Data Science

The University of California-Riverside Master of Science in Computational Data Science (MS in CDS) degree focuses on the computational foundations of Data Science, providing an in-depth understanding of how large data sets can be stored, manipulated, visualized, and how to accomplish learning from such data sets. The recent rapid growth of artificial intelligence shows that no discipline today can function without relying on a deep analysis of data, whether it be manufacturing, logistics, health care, public safety, or the military.

The MS in CDS is a comprehensive, in-person program, offered jointly by the Computer Science and Engineering Department and the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department within the Bourns College of Engineering. Unique within the University of California system in its focus on Computational Data Science this brand-new MS program (approved by the UCOP in December 2022) is a STEM designated degree accepting new students each Fall quarter.

The curriculum has six core courses (Data Analytics and Exploration, Fundamentals of Data Science, Fundamentals of Machine Learning, Big Data Management, Data Mining Techniques and Database Management) as well as five elective courses and a Capstone Project in Data Science. Details of the program’s coursework appear here while the admission criteria are here. Information about the quarterly graduate tuition and fees appears in the UCR Registrar's site.

The MS in CDS builds on the extensive expertise and world-renowned research by our faculty in Computational Data Science. The program’s faculty have earned many prestigious awards, including early career awards like NSF CAREER and many senior faculty are Fellows of the IEEE and ACM. The two Departments share strong research groups in areas like: Big Data, Database Management, Data Mining, Artificial Intelligence, Deep Learning, Time Series, Natural Language Processing, Vision and Visualization. Our faculty publishes in the top conferences and journals, and is consistently funded by various grants from NSF, Army, Navy, DARPA and other funding agencies.
